BARREL TASTING 2014 PN 5 - James.jpg

James Leary

Founder of Snapper Rock Wines.

Growing up James’s father owned Northlands famous Kingfisher Lodge. Long summer days were spent fishing and evenings spent enjoying fine wines with the lodge guests.

A treasury asset manager by trade, James fell in love with the wine industry after investing in a vineyard project in Marlborough’s Ward Valley in 2008 just before moving to the UK. In the UK, his days were spent working in London’s financial district, but weekends were spent moonlighting selling New Zealand wines at festivals across the UK as ‘The Antipodean Sommelier’.

By 2011 the wine business spiraled into a full-time gig & the vineyard’s first vintage was ready to be bottled, so James formed Snapper Rock Wines, naming the wine after a favourite (secret) fishing spot, and launched the wines in the UK.

He moved back to New Zealand in 2015 to be closer to the vineyards, launch the brand domestically and more importantly, start a family.
